Douglas A. Hookie, 59, of David City, died Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln. Douglas Allen Hookie was born December 24, 1954, the youngest of 7 children, to Charles and Elsie Hookie in Lake Preston, SD. After graduating from Lake Preston High School in 1973, he attended Dakota State College in Madison, SD for 2 years; then transferred to the University of Sioux Falls (formerly Sioux Falls College) where he graduated in 1977 with a BS degree in Physical Education and Health and a Social Science minor. Doug married Jolene Clercx on June 11, 1977 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, MN. They raised 2 sons, Jeffrey Darrell and Andrew Joseph. Doug taught and coached in Florence, SD 1977-1978, Wessington, SD 1978-1979, Corsica, SD 1979-1981, Hot Springs, SD 1981-1992, Broken Bow, NE 1992-2000 & David City, NE 2000-2014. Over the years Doug taught Physical Education & Health, Weight Training, American Government, Economics, World History, US History, Psychology, Sociology & Geography and coached Varsity, Junior Varsity & Middle School Football, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Wrestling & Track. Doug retired from his career in education in May, 2014, but remained busy with many parttime jobs. Doug wasn’t afraid of hard work and would not turn down a request to help anyone. He worked at the Butler County Health Care Center Wellness Center, mowed at Sunshine Court, and his “Grandpa’s Lawn Care and Snow Removal” business. Doug’s grandchildren were his greatest joy in life and he was looking forward to a family trip to Disney World in 2016. Doug was a member of Presentation Catholic Church, a 23-year member of Broken Bow Elks Lodge #1688 and was in his 24th year as a high school football official. Doug is survived by his wife Jolene, sons Jeff (Abry) and their children Amara & Jackson of Omaha NE and Andy (Kaitlyn) and daughters Keira & Kadence of Lee’s Summit, MO. Doug was looking forward to welcoming his new grandson Carter in December. Brothers, Don (Judy) Hookie of Centerville, SD; Darrell Hookie of Brookings, SD. Sisters-in-law, Delaine Hookie of Lake Preston, SD and Nancy Hookie of Albion, IA, brothers-in-law, sisters-in law and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, brothers Clarence, Richard and Dale and sister Vera. Because Doug chose to be an organ & tissue donor, his lungs, kidneys, and liver have benefited 4 recipients. IN LEIU OF FLOWERS: donations may be made to Future Generations Health Care Foundation, Presentation Catholic Church or Family Wishes.
